Imitation is the biggest form of flattery, after all. After each book, and each particular writing style I come across, I feel as if I'm adding more tools to my belt. Sometimes to jumpstart my writing, I'll sit and read a chapter from one of my favorite books. For me, it's the best remedy for writer's block. Still, I have to be careful not to plagiarize a style too much.

Every writer gives me something that enriches my work - even the bad ones.

Part of my daily work right now is copy typing from Sarah Selecky's collection of short stories, This Cake Is For The Party. Her lean, laser-accurate voice makes my eyes pop open. I couldn't plagiarize her though. Her voice is too distinctive and it would be like me trying to speak with a French accent.
